AbstractA quasi-geostrophic model with finite differences in vertical is used to investigate the effects of latent heat of liberation parameterized with Mak's wave-CISK scheme and the dissipative terms. The inclusion of heating is essential to obtain characteristics of the most unstable wave similar to the observed disturbances. Using double maximum in the vertical distribution of heating and observed vertical profile of the zona! wind and temperature representative of summer monsoon region of India, the most unstable wavelenth and its vertical structure resemble with the observed characteristics of monsoon depression. The inclusion of the friction and Newtonian cooling some times gives the most unstable wave as Green's modes.
